The Kapama Private Nature Reserve, named after a Swazi king who’s tribe inhabited the area in the 1880, is situated close the town of Hoedspruit, bordering wildlife rich, big game reserves of Klaserie and Timbavati, and Thornybush. Covering 13000 ha, Kapama was proclaimed a private nature reserve in 1993, and is known for its combination of pristine wilderness and five star accommodation options and hospitality.
A game relocation program has ensured abundant game species, together with the big five. Besides these, there are also 350 bird species including rare species, such as the harrier hawk and knob billed duck.
Kapama reserve now supports a wide variety of wildlife, including the Big Five and large populations of plains game species. Climate can be likened to that of Kruger Park, with a higher degree of humidity in summer, given the close proximity to the Drakensberg escarpment.
The region is serviced by Hoedspruit’s Eastgate Airport, a mere 10-minute drive from the entrance to the reserve, and transferring to the lodge in open vehicles means game viewing upon arrival – so your safari starts even before you check-in. All you need to do is sit back, relax and be enchanted by Africa.
Worth the visit, adjacent to the reserve, is the renowned Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre. The result of one woman’s passion and concern for cheetahs. This centre was opened in 1990 as a cheetah breeding centre, and has subsequently grown to accommodate other endangered species; namely the cape wild hunting dog, the southern ground hornbill, and the blue crane. Elephant back rides, (both day and night) and interaction with other animals is also possible at ‘Camp Jabulani’ fringing the reserve, offering unique experiences with these highly intelligent animals.
