Karongwe Game Reserve is a 9 000 hectare piece of land, situated 65 km south east of the town of Tzaneen below the foothills of the Transvaal Drakensberg mountains created in 1998 when a group of landowners dropped their fences. Three tributary rivers to the Olifants River flow through the reserve, carving their way through the bedrock and dividing the reserve. The vegetation of the reserve falls within the savannah biome of Southern Africa with distinct vegetation zones being represented – mixed Low veld and Mopane bush veld along with grass savannah, riverine vegetation and rocky outcrops.
Over 60 mammal species and an abundant bird life makes for game viewing, which includes the big five, all the cats – lion, leopard and cheetah – and of the course the other top ranking predator, the spotted hyena.
Accommodation is available at a number of privately owned luxury or family lodges and Safari farms on the reserve. These vary from rustic bush camps to exclusive bush lodges. Karongwe Bush Lodge offers a natural bush experience for small groups of up to 12 guests. The tranquil and beautiful lodge is remotely located deep into the bush and adjacent to the Makhutswe River with wonderful views over the magnificent mountains, bush and river. All tents feature en-suite bathrooms with a shower and come complete with fans, hairdryers, mini bars, tea and coffee-making facilities, and electricity. There is also a fully licensed bar on a scenic deck, a swimming pool area, and a boma for outdoor dining
There are plenty of activities to keep you entertained , including daily game drives, guided walks, horse riding, trips to the Kruger National Park and Panorama Route, hot-air balloon trips, boat trips and adventure sports, including paintball, quad biking and water rafting. Guides are mostly local Shangaan, who add cultural and historical flavour to the drives with their tribal knowledge and close relationship with the environment and animals.
